Free radicals are those unstable molecules that are always on the hunt for stability. They do this by reacting with other compounds like proteins, lipids, or even DNA in our skin cells. This reaction, known as oxidation, can slowly but surely undermine the skin’s structure and overall appearance. 

As time goes on, oxidative stress can lead to:

  • Collagen and Elastin Breakdown: This is when the proteins that keep our skin firm and elastic start to weaken, leading to those early signs of ageing we all dread.
  • Barrier Impairment: Here, the outer lipid layer that acts as a shield for our skin gets damaged, resulting in dryness and heightened sensitivity.
  • Uneven Skin Tone: Overstimulation of melanin production, which may contribute to dark spots or dullness.

These effects develop gradually, often becoming more noticeable for individuals exposed to high pollution over long periods.

Protecting Skin from Pollution

Blue Light (High-Energy Visible Light)

Alongside air pollutants, our daily exposure to blue light, also known as high-energy visible (HEV) light, is becoming a growing concern. This type of light is emitted by our electronic devices such as smartphones, computers, and LED screens. Blue light penetrates deeply into the skin.
