Exfoliators are those fantastic skincare products that help get rid of dead skin cells sitting on the surface, giving you a smoother, brighter, and healthier glow. Our skin has its natural way of renewing itself through a process called desquamation, where the old, dead cells from the top layer (the stratum corneum) fall away to make room for fresh cells underneath. But sometimes, this natural shedding can slow down due to factors like ageing, environmental stressors, or certain skin conditions, which can lead to a dull complexion, uneven skin tone, and clogged pores.

That’s where exfoliators play an important role. They help speed up this renewal process by either physically or chemically loosening and removing those dead skin cells.

Physical exfoliators use gritty particles or tools to manually scrub away the top layer of skin, while chemical exfoliators use ingredients like alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs), beta hydroxy acids (BHAs), and enzymes to break down the bonds between dead cells, making it easier for them to be shed.

Regularly exfoliating your skin can really improve its texture, boost the absorption of your skincare products, stimulate collagen production, and even help reduce the appearance of wrinkles and pigmentation.

Knowing the different types of exfoliators and how they work is essential for picking the right one for your skin’s unique needs, ensuring you get effective and gentle exfoliation with minimal irritation.

Components in Physical Exfoliators

The “gritty” component of a physical exfoliator can come from a range of sources.

  • Natural Particles: These can be finely ground powders such as coffee, sugar, salt, oats, crushed nut shells (like walnut or almond), and seeds (like apricot or strawberry). Most of the homemade exfoliators contain these ingredients.
  • Microbeads: These microbeads offer a natural and sustainable alternative to plastic microbeads. Their perfectly round shape is key, as it helps reduce the chances of tiny tears and irritation that can happen with rough, jagged exfoliating particles like crushed nut shells. Some great eco-friendly options include natural cellulose microbeads and jojoba beads.
  • Tools: This category also includes non-product-based exfoliants like face brushes, loofahs, and washcloths.

DR LEVY RADICAL REBOOT PRO PEEL

Dr Levy’s Radical Reboot Pro Peel is a fantastic blend of physical and acid exfoliation that leaves your skin looking radiant. The natural cellulose microbeads work gently to lift away impurities without harming your skin’s protective layer. Meanwhile, fruit and flower acids like glycolic, mandelic, and hibiscus work their magic by breaking down the bonds between dead skin cells, which helps speed up cell turnover.

This approach not only boosts oxygen flow to the skin but also evens out skin tone, refines its texture and supports a healthy microbiome along with a well-hydrated barrier. Plus, the addition of black willow bark and citric acid enhances regeneration, provides antimicrobial benefits, and offers antioxidant protection.

TEOXANE ACTIVE MICROSCRUB

Teoxane Active Microscrub taps into the power of natural scrubbing particles to gently yet effectively sweep away dead skin cells and impurities. These tiny particles work to polish and smooth the skin’s surface without causing any irritation, helping to clear out pores and promote a brighter complexion. When combined with the papain enzyme and patented RHA, this exfoliator not only revitalises skin texture but also keeps it hydrated and strengthens the skin barrier, making it an ideal choice for all skin types looking for a radiant, refreshed glow.

Exfoliating Process

Common Ingredients in Chemical Exfoliators

  • Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs): AHAs are water-soluble acids that often come from natural sources like fruits, milk, and sugar cane. Because they dissolve in water, they mainly work on the surface of your skin, gently exfoliating dead skin cells and promoting cell turnover. This process helps skin get smoother and brighter while enhancing texture and minimising fine lines. Glycolic acid, lactic acid and mandelic acid are examples of AHAs.
  • Beta Hydroxy Acids (BHAs): BHAs are unique because they’re oil-soluble, which means they can dive deep into those enlarged pores that are clogged with excess oil and sebum. This ability allows BHAs to clear out the blockages that lead to acne and blackheads. Plus, they come with anti-inflammatory and antibacterial benefits, which work wonders in soothing redness and swelling. If you have oily or acne-prone skin, BHAs are a fantastic choice; they help create a smoother texture and a clearer complexion by keeping oil production in check and promoting cell renewal. Salicylic acid is the most common BHA used in skincare.
  • Enzymes: Enzymes are often sourced from fruits and are considered the gentlest type of chemical exfoliators. They work by breaking down the protein bonds that hold dead skin cells together. You’ll typically find them in products that feature papain (from papaya), bromelain (from pineapple), or pumpkin enzymes. These enzymes offer a super gentle exfoliation, making them ideal for sensitive skin or for anyone just starting out with chemical exfoliation.

Exfoliating the Skin

The Golden Rules of Exfoliation: A Simple Guide

Exfoliation can work wonders for achieving that radiant skin we all desire, but it’s important to approach it with a bit of knowledge. To maximise your results while keeping irritation at bay, keep these golden rules in mind.

  1. Start Slow: If you’re just diving into exfoliation, kick things off with once or twice a week to gauge how your skin responds. As your skin gets used to it, you can gradually ramp up the frequency, but remember, less is more!
  2. Don’t Overdo It: Your skin should feel smooth and refreshed after exfoliating, not raw or tight. Going overboard can harm your skin’s protective barrier, leading to redness and breakouts. If you notice any stinging or discomfort, it’s a clear signal to dial it back.
  3. Timing Matters: The ideal time to exfoliate is at night. Since chemical exfoliants can increase your skin’s sensitivity to sunlight, doing it in the evening allows your skin to rejuvenate while you sleep.
  4. Follow Up with Hydration: After you exfoliate, your skin is primed to soak up products. Be sure to apply a hydrating toner, serum, or moisturiser right after to soothe your skin and help restore its natural barrier.
  5. Sunscreen is a Must: You’re unveiling a fresh layer of skin that’s more susceptible to sun damage. Make it a non-negotiable part of your daily routine to apply sunscreen and protect your skin from potential harm and hyperpigmentation.
