Powered by Iceland: What's Inside Bioeffect’s Smart Formulations?

October 17, 2025

Bioeffect’s Powers range captures Iceland’s natural purity and combines it with cutting-edge biotechnology to produce science-backed results.

Reading time: 7 minutes

Having visited Iceland twice, I have been truly captivated by how seamlessly the country blends nature with innovation. Whether that’s by harnessing geothermal energy to power homes, or creating truly sustainable, innovative products which draw on Iceland’s pure water and clean air. This same philosophy shines through in Bioeffect – a skincare brand that captures Iceland’s natural purity and combines it with cutting-edge biotechnology to produce science-backed skincare products. For example, the products themselves contain soft and pure Icelandic water which has been geologically filtered through layers of inert volcanic lava.

Let’s delve deeper into the intensive anti-aging ‘Power’ products designed by Bioeffect. These products can be used individually or layered with each other for maximum effect, which makes bundles such as ‘Pure Power’ and ‘Power Collection’, perfect.

Bioeffect’s Formulations Are Powerful for Anti Aging

EGF Power Serum

This serum has been formulated to support the skin barrier, brighten complexion and target key signs of aging (wrinkles, hyperpigmentation and dehydration). This power serum is more potent than the EGF serum due to the higher concentration of EGF. It does this through an advanced 12-ingredient formula, featuring;

  • Bioeffect EGF (Epidermal Growth Factor): EGF is a protein (growth factor) which stimulates skin cells (such as keratinocytes and fibroblasts) to grow, divide and migrate. It works by binding to receptors on skin cells, triggering signalling pathways inside the cells, leading to increased cell proliferation. A clinical trial of an EGF serum showed that 3 months of twice-daily use improved fine lines, texture and pigmentation in people aged 39-75 (1). Essentially, when applied topically, EGF can help encourage fresh, healthy skin cells to surface faster – improving texture and tone. It also helps to support the skin’s natural collagen production to improve skin density.
  • Bioeffect KGF (Keratinocyte Growth Factor): KGF is another growth factor which helps to strengthen and rebuild. It is found naturally in the skin, keeping the barrier intact and healthy, protecting from external damage.
  • Hyaluronic Acid (HA):  HA is a key molecule involved in skin moisture, with its ability to retain water (2).
  • N-Acetyl Glucosamine (NAG): NAG is a precursor to HA, helping to increase the skin’s natural reserves of HA. Clinical trials have also shown topical application of NAG results in a decrease in hyperpigmentation (3).

These ingredients work together seamlessly. Clinical studies have shown the effectiveness of the serum, with improvement seen in 5 key signs of aging by up to 50% or more. Moreover, with fewer ingredients, Bioeffect feeds into the clean beauty category, with a fragrance, silicone and alcohol free formula. This lends itself to a smooth, clear texture, meaning the serum is able to absorb quickly without leaving a sticky residue.

For the best results, 2-4 drops should be applied to the face, neck and décolleté, using circular, upwards motions. It can be used in the morning, to start your day, before applying moisturiser, sunscreen or make-up. Alternatively, it can be incorporated into your evening self-care routine, applied to clean skin for advanced skin repair while you sleep. For maximum results, however, the power serum should be applied day and night.

EGF Power Cream

The EGF Power Cream features a curated blend of clean, plant-based ingredients, such as Bioeffect EGF and hyaluronic acid as well as;

  • Barley Beta Glucan: Beta glucan is a natural polysaccharide, in this case from barley. It encompasses a range of bioactivities such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, barrier-repair and moisturising effects (4).
  • Niacinamide: As a form of Vitamin B3, this molecule supports the skin barrier, reducing inflammation and enhancing hydration. It has been shown to effectively penetrate the stratum corneum (outermost layer of the skin) (5).
  • Oridonin: A natural plant compound found in herbs (Rabdosia rubescens), presenting a range of biological effects. For example, anti-inflammation and antioxidant meaning  it is able to counteract oxidative damage to the skin.
  • Squalane: A naturally-occurring oil used for its hydrating and moisturising effects. Squalane oil is a saturated form of squalene, which is a key part of sebum (our skin’s natural oils).

It can be used to target wrinkles, age spots, aiding in skin firmness, density and hydration. The cream should be applied to the face, neck and décolleté, both in the morning and at night. An in-house efficacy study carried out by Bioeffect, whereby participants used the EGF power cream twice-daily for 3 months. The results showed an up to 60% increase in the appearance of skin density, up to 53% decrease in visible fine lines and up to 36% decrease in the appearance of pigmentation spots.

Bioeffect’s Power Formulations

EGF Power Eye Cream

This eye cream combines innovative biotechnology with potent ingredients to address skin aging around the delicate eye area. It works to reduce puffiness, dark circles and the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. The product contains 6 active ingredients, including Bioeffect EGF and niacinamide, as well as;

  • Caffeine: In skincare, caffeine can reduce puffiness and dark circles due to its vasoconstrictive properties (it narrows blood vessels) (6). It can also act as an antioxidant to protect against environmental damage.
  • Bakuchiol: Found in the Psoralea corylifolia plant, bakuchiol is a potent antioxidant. It is seen as a natural retinol alternative, stimulating collagen production and enhancing cell turnover.
  • Barley seed extract: This peptide-rich extract enhances the stability of EGF. It helps in collagen formation, protecting the skin from moisture loss and strengthening the skin barrier.
  • Ceramides: These essential lipids in the skin act as the ‘glue’ holding skin cells together, enhancing the skin’s protective barrier.

The cream should be applied to the skin around the eyes, by gently tapping the product into the skin with the fingertips. It can be used in the morning and evening. Bioeffect’s efficacy study showed an up to 130% increase in skin hydration, 165% increase in skin density and 91% increase in skin elasticity.

30-day treatment

This treatment includes using an anti-aging serum which contains three powerful growth factors – EGF, KGF and interleukin-1 alpha (IL-1a). All of which are produced in barley using advanced plant biotechnology. IL-1a is another growth factor which supports the skin’s integrity.

A scientific efficacy study carried out by Bioeffect showed;

  • Up to 63% improvement in the appearance of skin elasticity
  • Up to 176% improvement in skin hydration
  • Up to 84% reduction in the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

3-4 drops should be applied to the face, neck and décolleté in the morning and evening. The serum should be used for 30 days at a time, with repeat applications of the treatment up to four times a year. Once again, the formula only contains 9 ingredients, making it an environmentally conscious formulation.

Conclusion

Each of these formulations reflects Bioeffect’s meticulous approach to skincare - combining biotechnological innovation with natural products and sustainability. Through its precise use of growth factors and clean formulations, the brand continues to redefine what effective, eco-conscious skincare can achieve.
