Glutathione is naturally occurring in the body. It is the body’s most abundant antioxidant, and it protects from oxidative stress caused by free radicals.
Oxidative stress is a key contributor to photoaging on the skin, which increase the presence of wrinkles and dark spots. In addition, oxidative stress causes inflammation within the skin. Glutathione is a powerful antioxidant to help reduce oxidative damage and prevent premature aging.
The supplementation of Glutathione has been investigated in randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trials. Daily supplementation of Glutathione was shown to increase the body’s stores of this key nutrient.¹ Clinical trials investigating oxidised Glutathione in topical skincare revealed that it also has skin brightening results.²
Glutathione is a peptide that consists of 3 amino acids called cysteine, glycine, and glutamate.² It is naturally found in the body where it functions as a primary antioxidant.²
Antioxidants are needed to protect the body and skin from highly reactive molecules called free radicals. Free radicals are found in the environment in pollution, but are produced in the skin by exposure to UV radiation, stress, or poor diets. Because free radicals are highly reactive, they cause chemical reactions with cellular lipids, proteins, and DNA, which leads to damage. This damage causes inflammation and, overtime, accelerates the aging process. Free radical damage can increase the number of wrinkles, as well as the production of dark spots. Antioxidants protect cells against free radical damage.
Glutathione is an extremely powerful antioxidant that can be incorporated into nutraceutical supplements or cosmeceutical skincare. As it is an unstable molecule, sophisticated formulations are needed to preserve its potency.
